Mayor Tony Perry and the Township Committee, and Monmouth County Commissioner Director Tom Arnone and the County Commissioners, held a press conference today in recognition of National First Responders Day and the 10th Anniversary of Superstorm Sandy. The press conference was held at Port Monmouth Fire Company on Main Street and was attended by chiefs and members of Middletown’s Fire, Police, OEM, and EMS departments, along with local dignitaries, and mayors from surrounding towns impacted by Sandy. Mayor Perry thanked our first responders for their selfless and heroic actions during Sandy, and every day, and discussed how our community united during this trying time. Both he and Commissioner Director Arnone applauded the leadership during the disaster, including Tony Fiore, who was Middletown’s mayor during Sandy, Township Administrator Tony Mercantante, OEM Director Charlie Rogers, Mike Oppegaard, who was the County’s OEM Director, and Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden. Sheriff Golden highlighted the tireless efforts of our first responders, as did Aberdeen Mayor Fred Tagliarini who spoke on behalf of the Bayshore Conference of Mayors. Other mayors in attendance were Union Beach Mayor Charles Cocuzza and Keansburg Mayor George Hoff. Mayor Perry closed the press conference by commending all those involved with the U.S. Army Corps’ Port Monmouth Flood Control Project which will prevent future flooding in the township’s most vulnerable neighborhoods.

Completed phases include beach and dune replenishment and the construction of a jetty, levee, floodwall, pump station & tide gate, road closure gate, and the regrading of Route 36 with these features being turned over to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection for continued operation and maintenance of the project. Contract 5 was awarded in September and work will soon begin on the Compton’s Creek side of the project. Property surveys, appraisals, permits, and easement acquisitions are currently underway to allow the construction of a floodwall & levee system along Route 36, Creek Road, and Main Street. Also included is the construction of a levee, floodwall, elevation of a portion of Port Monmouth Road, installation of road closure gates on Broadway and Campbell Avenues, and construction of a pumping station on Main Street, across from Renfrew Place.
