Middletown Commemorates Paul Revere’s Famous Overnight Ride with Lanterns at Town Hall on Friday, 4/18
On behalf of Middletown Township’s America 250 Committee, Town Hall will feature two lanterns in the window on Friday, April 18th in recognition of Two Lights for Tomorrow, a nationwide initiative to commence the celebration of our country's 250th birthday and commemorate Paul Revere’s famous overnight ride of April 18-19, 1775. While looking at the lanterns, imagine Paul Revere riding a horse along Kings Highway to alert Patriots of the British army’s movements. Revere arranged for lanterns to be hung in the steeple of the Old North Church: one lantern if the British were coming by land, and two if by sea. Two lanterns will be lit at Town Hall to symbolize how it was done in the steeple of the Old North Church when British troops crossed the Charles River to Cambridge. After the signal was given, Revere rode from Boston to Lexington and Concord to warn Patriot leaders, including John Hancock and Samuel Adams, about the approaching British troops.

Navesink Maritime Heritage Association Hosts Grover House Panel Dedication

Last week, Mayor Tony Perry went to the Grover House (940 West Front Street) for the Navesink Maritime Heritage Association's (NMHA) interpretive panel dedication. The panel research, writing, and design were a project included in a heritage tourism grant from the New Jersey Historic Trust (NJHT). The panels tell the story of the architecture and construction methods of the Grover House, whose earliest rooms date to 1730 and the Grover family (with James I being a Monmouth Patentee). An additional panel illustrates the mission, projects, and programs of the NMHA, who leases the Grover House as their headquarters. Original research on the Grover family and house were conducted by Westfield Associates, Mary Lou Strong, and Township Administrator Tony Mercantante when Middletown Township explored an adaptive reuse project for the structure in Stevenson Park, which became listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Further research on the Grover family, also funded by the NJHT grant, was conducted by Rick Geffken. The panels were designed by Lynn Fylak and installed by Rik van Hemmen and Chuck Abel. "We are proud to share with the public the expanded research of the family who lived in this structure, now our headquarters, for seven generations," said NMHA President Lynn Fylak. "James Grover is not the best-known Monmouth Patentee, but his contributions are extensive. As we head into 2026, this project enables Middletown to promote another of the historic buildings in the township — and the man who held the first tavern license!"
