On Saturday, September 14th, the USS NEW JERSEY (SSN 796) was officially commissioned at Naval Weapons Station Earle in Leonardo. The nuclear-powered submarine is the third warship to be named after New Jersey. It is also the first fast-attack submarine that was designed to be fully integrated for both men and women.

This Virginia-class submarine is led by Commander Steven Halle, has an average crewmember age of 26 years old, and boasts a crew of nearly 135 Navy personnel.

Mayor Tony Perry was incredibly humbled to deliver the welcome remarks and greet the thousands of people in attendance for this historic moment. Governor Philip Murphy, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, and Newport News Shipbuilding President Jennifer Boykin were some of the other speakers.

In the week leading up to the commissioning, our community came together to make the USS NEW JERSEY (SSN 796) crew members feel right at home. Residents went to Sandy Hook to welcome the submarine when it first arrived, local businesses offered discounts to the sailors to thank them for their service, and the Township hung up patriotic banners throughout town and presented a Key to the Township to Commander Halle.

Middletown is proud to support the U.S. Navy and sincerely wishes the crew members of the USS NEW JERSEY (SSN 796) “fair winds and following seas”.

NJDEP Places Port Monmouth Facility into "Operational Mode" Due to Elevated Tides

Due to the rain and elevated tides predicted to reach our area through Sunday evening, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) placed the Port Monmouth facility into "Operational Mode”.

The Pews Creek Tide Gate is ready to function as designed and was placed in "Operational Mode" on Friday, September 20th at 3:00 AM. The operation will allow the gates to automatically open and close based on the tides while ensuring the interior drainage basin does not exceed elevation +5.0 NAVD88. It also allows for the gates to open during low tide cycles so the water can move in and out of the basin to assist the eco system.

The Road Closure Gate on Old Port Monmouth Road remains open, and no action is planned at this time. DEP will monitor tides and coordinate with the Township and County should weather change and require closure. A tide of concern/observation for the road closure will be at 11:43 PM Sunday, with a tide predicted to be +5.0 with a level of uncertainty as high as +5.9 (no rain in region).

North Middletown-Port Monmouth Neighborhood Plan Survey and Meetings Back of Postcard

Middletown Township, Ideal Beach Community Association, Bayshore Family Success Center, Affordable Housing Alliance, and Habitat for Humanity are creating a community-driven neighborhood plan for the North Middletown-Port Monmouth area! This neighborhood planning process will bring together residents, business owners, public officials, local organizations, and other stakeholders to develop a comprehensive set of proposed strategies and activities to improve the community.

Once completed, this neighborhood plan will unlock special state funding to implement these proposed strategies through the New Jersey Neighborhood Revitalization Tax Credit (NRTC) Program.

The first community meeting was held in May and a second community discussion was held at the North Middletown-Port Monmouth Family Fun Day in July. The next meeting will be held on Thursday, September 26th at 6 PM at Ocean Avenue Elementary School (235 Ocean Avenue).

We encourage residents who live in the planning area to complete this Google survey. Visit www.middletownplan.org for more information about the plan.
