Middletown Remembers 23rd Anniversary of 9/11

On Wednesday, September 11th, Middletown Township held a silent memorial and wreath tribute at the Middletown World Trade Center Memorial Gardens to honor the 37 residents we lost 23 years ago and the individuals who have passed since from 9/11-related illnesses. The Middletown Township Police Department's Honor Guard and members of the Middletown Township Committee, USS NEW JERSEY (SSN 796), VFW Post 2179, and American Legion Post 515 began the ceremony with a wreath tribute. After the wreaths were placed, Middletown Township Fire Chief William Kane Jr. rang a bell 37 times in memory of each resident whose life was taken on that tragic day. After the bell tolled, hundreds of people, including 9/11 victims' loved ones, Township Committee members, sailors, local dignitaries, first responders, veterans, and community members, lit candles and walked through the Gardens which were illuminated by luminaries. Thank you to everyone who participated in our poignant annual service. We promised to never forget 23 years ago, and our silent tribute was a testament to that vow. Prior to our service, Middletown PBA Local 124 held its 4th annual 9/11 Memorial 5K on Saturday, September 7th. Proceeds will be donated to a scholarship that the PBA is creating in honor of late Detective Lt. Joseph Capriotti, known as the "keeper of the list," because he personally notified every Middletown family who lost a loved one on 9/11. He died from a 9/11-related illness in 2019. Proceeds will also be donated to local nonprofit The P.O. Ken Tietjen Memorial Foundation, which was created in memory of late Middletown resident, police officer, and volunteer firefighter Kenneth Tietjen who gave his life in the line of duty on September 11, 2001. Mayor Tony Perry, Committeewoman Kimberly Kratz, and Committeeman Ryan Clarke were proud to support our police and the participants at the event.

Tindall Park Construction Update: Courts Closed For Recreational Tennis Until Project Is Complete
Construction began this summer at Tindall Park. The first phase of the project, which is now nearly complete, included renovating Tennis Courts 1-8. Since the second phase of the project recently began, tennis and pickleball courts will be closed to the public until the facility is no longer an active construction site. The area between the courts, the roadway into the park, and the area around the second set of courts have not been completed, and the contractors still need to install curbs and pave the parking lot. Currently, only the Middletown North High School Tennis Team is permitted to practice and play matches on courts 1-8. The Township is making this exception because matches are controlled events that are overseen by coaches with a limited duration. If the Township forced the tennis team to use another location, the School District would have to bus their players to and from wherever they went, which would cost both the District and taxpayers money. While the renovations are being completed, there are many courts across town that recreational tennis players can use for the next 4-6 weeks. Thank you for your patience as the Township prepares for a complete opening that ensures the facility is fully functional, safe, and enjoyable for everyone. Click HERE to see a list of other courts that recreational tennis players can use and for more information about why the courts are closed to the public.
