On Monday, Middletown Township held its annual Memorial Day Parade with American Legion Post 338 to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. The community turnout for the parade was amazing and Mother Nature cooperated with sunshine instead of the predicted rain. The parade stepped off from Bayshore Middle School in Leonardo at 10:00 AM. Grand Marshal John Alonso, longtime Middletown resident and veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, led the procession along with the Middletown Township Police Department’s Honor Guard. Mr. Alonso’s car was followed by the Township Committee and dignitaries, the Knights of Columbus, BYAA, local Scout troops, Middletown High School South and North marching bands, antique cars, Disney characters, and first responders who proudly turned on their vehicle’s sirens to engage parade attendees. Everyone was there to remember and honor those who fought and died for the freedoms we are able to enjoy today. The 3-mile parade route concluded at American Legion Post 338, where Commander Robert Colton and Mayor Tony Perry each shared some inspirational and patriotic words and recognized Grand Marshal John Alonso for his service to both our community and country. American Legion Auxiliary Chaplain Katie Wilson did the Invocation and Benediction and Auxiliary President Dawn Norcross and Commander for the Sons of the American Legion Eric Henton did the Presenting of the Wreath. The service ended with Taps. After the parade ended, community members were encouraged to stay and enjoy hot dogs and beverages. Thank you to American Legion Parade Chairwoman Lisa Natale, Commander Robert Holton, and Finance Officer Michael Piatti for coordinating this important event as well as the many individuals and organizations who participated in the parade. On Monday, local nonprofit Friends of Cedar View hosted their annual Memorial Day ceremony at Cedar View Cemetery in Lincroft. Unfortunately, the event was cut short due to a thunderstorm, but Police Chief Craig Weber was still proud to attend as a representative of the Township. Friends of Cedar View is responsible for helping restore Cedar View Cemetery which is the final resting place of Black Civil War veterans. Middletown donated a plaque for the cemetery in 2022 to help preserve the site's history and honor the heroes who are buried there.

How to Report a Neighborhood Safety Concern The Safety Council of Middletown would like to hear from residents about any safety concerns that may be occurring in their neighborhood. The Safety Council is an advisory board that reviews safety concerns in the township and provides guidance to the Township Committee and the Police Department. Some safety issues the board can help address include: - Speeding
- Parking on busy roads that impact traffic flow
- Roads that flood from little rainfall
- Traffic not adhering to crosswalk or stop signs
- Trees and branches that are limiting passage on sidewalks
- Sidewalks that are uprooted or damaged that could cause someone to fall
- Unusual amount of traffic or people congregating at a specific house in your neighborhood that could indicate possible illegal activity
- Garbage piling up on side roads or on a lot in your neighborhood
If you would like a safety issue addressed, please inform the Council so they can help you achieve a successful outcome. You can report your safety concern by contacting the Middletown Crossing Guard Office at 732-615-2100 ext. 2044 or by emailing bpfleger@middletownnj.org.
