Community Rallies for New All-Accessible Playground at McMahon Park

Group photo

On Tuesday, May 7th, the community came out in droves on a gorgeous day to attend the grand opening of the new all-accessible playground at McMahon Park in North Middletown (380 Atlantic Avenue).

Middletown Recreation Director Janet Dellett brought the crowd’s attention to the podium and passed the microphone to Mayor Tony Perry who welcomed hundreds of families to the new playground. Tons of kids were excitedly waiting for the ribbon to be cut so they could try out the new equipment.

Mayor Perry thanked everyone involved in bringing this project to fruition, especially the local families who advocated for a playground that was designed to allow children of all needs and abilities to be able to access the cool equipment and play with their friends.

Keynote speaker Eric LeGrand, a former defensive tackle for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, entrepreneur, motivational speaker, and author of Believe: My Faith and the Tackle That Changed My Life, offered inspirational remarks as he explained how he turned tragedy into triumph. In 2010, Eric sustained a severe spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed while making a tackle but has been making a consistent recovery over the last decade. During his speech, he reminded everyone about the importance of knowing you did your best to become the best person you are capable of becoming. Eric’s mother was also with him, and he kindly wished all the moms a happy Mother’s Day.

After Eric’s moving words, members of Middletown’s governing body, Township officials from Administration, Recreation, Public Works, and Police departments, Whirl Construction, Gametime, and the families who advocated for the playground, cut the ribbon before officially showcasing this wonderful play area.

While the kids were having an AWESOME time playing, everyone could grab dinner from the No Limits Café food truck, dessert from the Best Day Ever Ice Cream Truck, as well as check out the MonmouthNJ250 truck that promoted initiatives for our nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026. RallyCap Sports also hosted a non-competitive kickball game and there was an MLB-Sanctioned Pitch, Hit & Run Contest!

Thank you to everyone whose passionate determination helped bring this playground to life – especially Drew Zimmerman, Stacey Owen-Donnelly and her daughter Teddi, and Nicole, Camilo, and Mateo Pardo!

At Monday's Township Committee Meeting, Mayor Tony Perry celebrated Jewish American Heritage Month by presenting a proclamation to Susan Antman and Dan Rozett of the nonprofit Jewish Federation in the Heart of New Jersey. May 6th was also recognized as Holocaust Remembrance Day in the United States to pay tribute to all those lives lost.

Although decades have passed since the Holocaust, Jewish Americans and people of Jewish descent continue to face anti-Semitism. Middletown Township strives to be a place where people of all backgrounds can feel safe. We proudly embrace all our residents who make up our town and bring their own religious and cultural traditions that enrich our community.

Mayor Perry also kicked off Mental Health Awareness Month by presenting a proclamation to Middletown High School South student Piper Wyman. Piper is the founder of the "Be the Difference" suicide prevention community walk (with help from her peers at both Middletown High School North and South). The walk will be returning for its second year on Sunday, May 19th at 10 AM.

How to Report a Neighborhood Safety Concern

The Safety Council of Middletown would like to hear from residents about any safety concerns that may be occurring in their neighborhood.

The Safety Council is an advisory board that reviews safety concerns in the township and provides guidance to the Township Committee and the Police Department. Some safety issues the board can help address include:

  • Speeding
  • Parking on busy roads that impact traffic flow
  • Roads that flood from little rainfall
  • Traffic not adhering to crosswalk or stop signs
  • Trees and branches that are limiting passage on sidewalks
  • Sidewalks that are uprooted or damaged that could cause someone to fall
  • Unusual amount of traffic or people congregating at a specific house in your neighborhood that could indicate possible illegal activity
  • Garbage piling up on side roads or on a lot in your neighborhood

If you would like a safety issue addressed, please inform the Council so they can help you achieve a successful outcome. You can report your safety concern by contacting the Middletown Crossing Guard Office at 732-615-2100 ext. 2044 or by emailing bpfleger@middletownnj.org.
