The Middletown Recreation Department offers a wide variety of job opportunities throughout the year. Most positions are seasonal appointments lasting six months or less. Counselors - Hiring NOW!!
Job Description
Camp Counselors will assist with leading, overseeing, and cleaning up for a variety of sports, games, crafts and nature activities. Counselors participate, energize, interact and supervise campers in all activities, including lunch, to ensure participation, safety and fun.
Essential Functions
- Maintain and inventory all equipment necessary for the program area.
- Ensure that the site is kept clean and organized.
- Identify and respond to camper behavior issues.
- Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports and daily attendance.
- Know and understand all emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
- Know, enforce and follow all safety guidelines and the Code of Conduct associated with the camp. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers’ safety and their whereabouts at all times.
- Actively participate in staff training and meetings.
- Help in other camp program areas as needed.
Qualifications
- Minimum age of 16.
- Experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or in a related field preferred, or a strong desire to go into such field.
- Ability to lead, plan, organize and implement program activities.
- Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.

Camp Coordinator - Hiring NOW!!
Interview Process
The final number of positions available are still being determined. Phone interviews will be conducted first, with in-person interviews happening in March/April.
Job Description
Camp Coordinators will oversee the various age groups’ staff and campers. One Camp Coordinator will be assigned per age division: Pioneers, Buccaneers, Explorers, Trail Blazers, Navigators and CITs. Each division’s campers will be divided into groups of 20-25 campers. The number of groups per division varies each week. The Camp Coordinator is responsible for planning age-appropriate activities and providing discipline and support to the counselors below them. Camp Coordinators will work together to schedule camp groups activities and locations each day/week.
Essential Functions
- Oversee the setup, up-keep and staffing of program area.
- Assist in training staff in using equipment and lesson planning for the program area.
- Maintain and inventory all equipment necessary for the program area.
- Ensure that the site is kept clean and organized.
- Provide support to Lead Counselors to coordinate programming among small groups.
- Write and implement a weekly schedule for your camp group with assistance from counselors.
- Communicate with parents about participant’s experiences and report concerns to Camp Director.
- Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports and daily attendance.
- Assist in mid-summer and post-summer evaluations with the Camp Director.
- Interact effectively with the camp staff as a total system, with campers’ best interests in mind.
- Know and understand all emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
- Know, enforce and follow all safety guidelines and the Code of Conduct associated with the camp. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers’ safety and their whereabouts at all times.
- Prepare for and actively participate in staff training and meetings.
- Help guide all counselors and volunteers to have a deeper understanding of leadership and counseling skills.
- Assist with the various administrative tasks necessary for camp to run efficiently.
Qualifications
- Certified school teacher, preferably in the age group looking to supervise.
- Certified in First Aid and CPR certification; may be provided if applicant does not currently have.
- Demonstrated ability to keep accurate records and organize program area logistics.
- Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.

Preschool Teacher Assistant - Hiring NOW!!
Job Description
A Part-Time position is available in the Recreation Department for the support teacher of the PreK3 class of the Middletown Preschool located at the Tonya Keller Community Center.
The person selected will be responsible for teaching, general supervision, and management of children 18 months to 5 years old. This person must be prepared professionally as teacher of young children, especially in the field of Early Childhood Education or Child Development. This person must be a sensitive and mature individual who is able to relate well to both children and adults. This person must have the personality and ability to provide leadership and stability for program continuity and mental capabilities to perform the job. This person also works the 3-5yo preschool summer camp for 6-7 weeks in July and August.
Responsibilities
- Assist the lead teacher in preparation for classes as well as hands-on in the classroom
- Collaborate in creating and maintaining a classroom environment suitable for preschool children
- Employ a variety of educational techniques (storytelling, educational play, media etc.) to teach children
- Observe each child to help them improve their social competencies and build self-esteem
- Encourage children to interact with each other and resolve occasional arguments
- Guide children to develop their artistic and practical capabilities through a carefully constructed curriculum (identify shapes, numbers or colors, do crafts etc.)
- Collaborate with other educators
- Maintain a clean and tidy classroom consistent with health and safety standards
Requirements
- Previous experience as a Preschool Teacher
- Excellent understanding of the principles of child development and preschool educational methods
- Excellent communication and instructional skills
- Ability to act as mediator between children
- Cool-tempered, friendly and reliable
- Certification in child CPR
Schedule
Schedule is Monday-Friday, 8am-1:30pm, year-round. The preschool program runs from September through mid-June. During the months of July and August this position is required to work the preschool summer camp, as well as prep for the upcoming school year. Summer hours are the same.
Medical Staff - Hiring NOW!!
Job Description
The Medical Staff is the primary health care professional at each site. The Medical Staff supports the Camp Staff in providing campers a safe, fun and educational experience in a supportive environment.
Essential Functions
- Observe and promote all rules and regulations established for the program.
- Clarify any health-related questions with parents prior to camp.
- Observe campers for illnesses and/or injuries. Report any difficulties related to health immediately to the Camp Director.
- Respond to medical emergencies and treat as necessary and assesses whether injuries/illnesses require further treatment. If necessary, may accompany camper to the hospital in the event of serious injury.
- Provide general first aid care (scrapes, minor cuts and bruises); treatment of colds/headaches, upset stomachs, etc.; and assesses whether further treatment is required.
- Call parent/guardian to report illness and/or injury.
- Maintain log of patients seen and treated.
- Maintain necessary records of medical forms on campers and staff.
- Act as the “late camper” and “early dismissal” check in/out person once camp begins.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must be a certified EMT in good standing.
- Certified in First Aid and CPR certification, may be provided if does not currently have.
- Possesses good leadership abilities and responsibility skills.
- Patient, enthusiastic, self-controlled and dependable.

Navigator Coach - Hiring NOW!!
Job Description
Provide one on one support to campers with physical, developmental, and/or emotional disabilities as they integrate into daily camp life. Navigator Coaches make adaptations to activities and crafts in order to ensure the camper’s successful participation. They are responsible for communicating with the Navigator Manager, parents, counselors, and other staff regarding the needs of the participant.
Essential Functions
- Maintain and inventory all equipment necessary for the program area.
- Ensure that the site is kept clean and organized.
- Help the Navigator Manager decide and implement a weekly schedule for your camp group.
- Together with the Navigator Manager, communicate with parents about participant’s experiences and report concerns to Camp Director.
- Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports and daily attendance.
- Know and understand all emergency procedures associated with the camp program.
- Know, enforce and follow all safety guidelines and the Code of Conduct associated with the camp. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers’ safety and their whereabouts at all times.
- Assists children with disabilities, as needed, in their participation in the summer recreation program.
- Actively participate in staff training and meetings.
- Help in other camp program areas as needed.
Qualifications
- Minimum age of 18.
- Experience working with children with disabilities, or a desire to study in a related field.

Volunteers - Accepted Year-Round
Job Description
Volunteers help to assist Counselors with the camp by aiding in the set up and clean of a variety of games, crafts and activities.

Qualifications
- Generally, grade 9 and/or 15 years old.
- Must have completed our Counselor In Training program prior to starting.
- Experience in camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or in a related field preferred, or a strong desire to go into such field.

Lifeguards - Hiring NOW!!
Job Description
Lifeguards ensure swimmer and bather safety on Ideal Beach. In this role, lifeguards enforce safety rules, monitor the water for danger, and rescue swimmers. Lifeguards may also determine when bodies of water need to be closed to swimmers. Lifeguards may be required to help assist in social distancing protocols on the beach. All applicants must have current lifeguard certification – no lifeguard training is provided.
Essential Functions
- Maintain constant surveillance of patrons in the designated swim area; act immediately and appropriately to secure safety of patrons in the event of emergency.
- Provide emergency care and treatment as required until the arrival of emergency medical services.
- Present professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintain a high standard of customer service.
- Perform various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility.
- Prepare and maintain appropriate activity reports.
- Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- One of the following certifications are required and are not offered through the township: United States Lifesaving Association Annual certification, South Jersey Lifeguard Chiefs Association Annual certification, North Shore Lifesaving Association Annual certification, Ocean Lifesaving Association (Provisional) Annual certification.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Skill in the application of lifeguarding surveillance and rescue techniques.
- Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork.
- Knowledge of CPR and emergency medical procedures.
- Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
- Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures.
Location

Schedule
Lifeguards are scheduled in pairs Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. Hours of operation are 10:00am – 4:00pm, 7 days a week. Required holidays include Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day.
Poricy Park Instructors - Not currently hiring.

Job Description
The Middletown Recreation Department is looking for part-time instructors to teach elementary-aged class trips at Poricy Park during the Spring and Fall seasons. Classes come for 2- or 4-hour programs on topics in Science and Colonial History. The most popular program is taking students to hunt for marine fossils on the property.
Essential Functions
- Lead curriculum and lessons focused on science and colonial history.
- Implement and run daily activities.
- Modify activities/lessons as needed to better implement within class structure.
- Prepare materials needed prior to each class and/or before class begins.
- Responsible for clean up after class.
- Facilitate classroom management techniques.
- Maintain and inventory all equipment necessary for the program area.
- Assist in maintaining accurate program records.
- Actively participate in staff training and meetings.
- Help in other program areas as needed.
Qualifications
- Minimum age of 18.
- Candidates should ideally have experience in teaching and an interest in the outdoors, natural sciences, or history. Will be trained in specific programs; all materials and program outlines are provided.
- Ability to lead, plan, organize and implement program activities.
