Mayor Tony Perry and Deputy Mayor Rick Hibell join elected officials and members of the Poricy Park Conservancy for a group photo in front of the monument, which is where Joseph Murray is believed to have died.

Poem recitation

Edward P. Manning reads his original poem alongside Poricy Park Conservancy Board President Elaine Hinckley, Mayor Tony Perry, Deputy Mayor Rick Hibell, Monmouth County Surrogate Maureen Raisch, Assemblywoman Vicky Flynn, and Assemblyman Gerry Scharfenberger

On Sunday, the Middletown America 250 Committee, Poricy Park Conservancy, and Middletown Parks & Recreation hosted Joseph Murray Day to honor the 245th anniversary of Joseph Murray's death. Murray was a Patriot who served in the Monmouth County militia as a soldier belonging to Colonel Asher Holmes’ Regiment under the command of Lieutenant Garret Hendrickson in opposition to the British during the Revolutionary War.

The event began with the Presenting of the Colors by the Middletown Township Police Department (MTPD) Honor Guard at the Joseph Murray monument, where a wreath was laid. Mayor Tony Perry welcomed all the attendees, many of whom were local historians, and read the Township's Joseph Murray Day proclamation and accepted one from Assemblyman Gerry Scharfenberger and Assemblywoman Vicky Flynn. After, Edward P. Manning recited his poem, A Monmouth County Patriot, that details Murray's life.

Following the poem, the MTPD Honor Guard ended the ceremony with a 21-gun salute. Once the ceremony concluded, attendees were able to tour the Murray Farmhouse and ask Middletown Parks & Recreation staff questions. There was also a Middletown America 250 table with giveaways, Revolutionary War information about our town and county, and a QR code for people to get points for attending the event. Community members will be able to earn points for every Middletown America 250 event they attend which will count toward the app's leaderboard.

Community Comes Together to Support Cancer Survivors and Caregivers at Annual Relay for Life

Relay for Life Survivor Lap

Mayor Tony Perry cheers on cancer survivors as they walk under a beautiful rainbow.

On Saturday evening, Mayor Tony Perry had the honor of attending the Annual Relay for Life of Middletown, which was held at Middletown High School South. Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's annual nationwide signature event that celebrates survivors, remembers those who have lost their battle with cancer, and unites our community to fight against a disease that has taken too much from too many.

Mayor Perry was humbled to give a speech during the Opening Ceremony and meet local cancer survivors and caregivers. Right before the Survivor Lap began, a heavy downpour came down and briefly paused the event. Within minutes, the rain came to a halt and all the survivors were able to begin the Survivor Lap underneath a bright and beautiful rainbow — symbolizing hope even in the darkest times.

Mayor Perry and his team walked some laps to join survivors, caregivers, and community members at this uplifting event that raises money for cancer research and brings awareness to this important cause.

On Saturday, the Affordable Housing Alliance (AHA) and Ideal Beach Community Association (IBCA) hosted a cleanup at Ideal Beach (49 Bayside Parkway, North Middletown) as part of NeighborWorks Week. OceanFirst Bank sponsored the event and made it possible, and SCOOPER STARS was there to provide delicious sweets. NeighborWorks America is about communities coming together to create positive change. As a charter member of the NeighborWorks network, AHA was proud to be part of this nationwide movement that works tirelessly to create affordable housing, promote financial stability, and invest in strong neighborhoods. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to clean Ideal Beach!

Middletown Township, the Bayshore Family Success Center, and Monmouth County Habitat for Humanity are currently partnering with AHA and IBCA to create a community-driven neighborhood plan for the North Middletown-Port Monmouth area. The plan’s strategies and activities build off community meetings, events, and input. With a work plan in place, opportunities for funding and investment to achieve the community's vision will become available through the New Jersey Neighborhood Revitalization Tax Credit (NRTC) Program.

NJAW Lead Service Line Replacement Program

Door-to-Door Canvassing Continues

Canvassing Map

Click on the canvassing map to view it in a larger PDF format.

CDM Smith, on behalf of New Jersey American Water (NJAW), started a door-to-door canvassing effort related to the Lead Service Line Replacement Program (LSLRP) in Middletown on Monday, February 3rd. The canvassing and internal inspections are currently taking place in the Port Monmouth Elementary School District in Area 1 on the map above. The entire canvassing is expected to take place over the next few months.

All CDM Smith inspectors will wear co-branded (NJAW and CDM Smith) high visibility logo vests and will have NJAW-issued Contractor ID badges. Inspectors will introduce themselves and the program to property owners and will then ask to enter the home to inspect the water service where it enters into the home (typically in a basement or crawl space).

The inspector will take exterior photos of the property and interior photographs of the service material and record the pipe material identified. Inspections generally take 15 minutes or less. At no time will residents be asked for money. Any customer that prefers to not have an internal inspection completed will be directed to alternatives to the inspections including self-reporting.

The Middletown Township Police Department is aware of the canvassing. If you have any questions about LSLRP, please email njawlead@cdmsmith.com and LeadFreeNJ@amwater.com.

Connect with the Township to Help Correct Concerns

Connect & Correct Logo

Middletown Township is now utilizing the “See-Click-Fix” platform so residents can easily contact the Township to report any concerns. The Township is branding this reporting tool as Connect & Correct since you can submit your request via the website and track its progress through completion.

Visit middletownnj.org and click on the Connect & Correct button. This link will direct you to a page of categories you can choose from to report your concern. Simply choose the relevant category from the list such as lost pet, pothole, sidewalks, playgrounds, etc. and add a brief description of the issue. You will then be able to track the status of the issue through updates on the platform or via email notifications.

Middletown Township has an ordinance that requires owners of a business or vacant and abandoned property to maintain liability insurance for negligent acts and omissions. The ordinance holds property owners responsible for maintaining and securing the property since vacant, abandoned, and blighted properties can cause a cycle of neighborhood deterioration. The ordinance penalizes owners whose property remains vacant year after year. Please visit middletownnj.org/abandonedproperty to either register your vacant/abandoned property or report a vacant/abandoned property.
