This morning, Mayor Tony Perry and Department of Public Works & Engineering (DPW) Director Ted Maloney visited Port Monmouth to survey the flooding from last night's storm. Ahead of the expected temperature drop, DPW crews will be working overnight until at least noon tomorrow to ensure that freezing temperatures don't impact the safety of our roadways. They will be cleaning debris and storm drain grates, as well as salting and treating the roads for icy conditions overnight. The last Township Committee Meeting of the year was an evening to celebrate! Mayor Tony Perry kicked off the meeting by announcing our inaugural Veteran of the Year: Veterans Affairs Committee (VAC) Chairman Dennis Beauregard. With the help of fellow VAC member Bob Siemer, Mayor Perry presented Dennis with a multi-dimensional engraved glass award to show our appreciation for his tireless efforts to advocate for veterans in our town and across the state. Bob spoke about his admiration for his fellow comrade and revealed that going forward the award will be deemed the Dennis J. Beauregard Veteran of the Year Award.
Dennis was drafted into the U.S. Army in May 1967. He went to Vietnam in August 1967 and was assigned to B Company, 3rd Battalion, 9th Infantry Division 6. He was wounded during “Tet” in 1968. In late January 1968, during the lunar new year (or “Tet”) holiday, North Vietnamese and communist Viet Cong forces launched a coordinated attack against a number of targets in South Vietnam. The U.S. and South Vietnamese militaries sustained heavy losses before finally repelling the communist assault. He has received the following military awards: Combat Infantryman, Badge (CIB), Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Commendation Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.
After Dennis received the Veteran of the Year Award, he and Bob presented the We Value Our Veterans Award to the Township Committee. Bob accepted that award from Governor Phil Murphy on behalf of Middletown Township. Middletown had to meet a certain number of requirements to earn this award, which recognizes the Township's efforts toward helping local veterans.
Please join the Township in thanking Dennis for his service to both our community and country!

Middletown DPW Building and Park Maintenance Division Head Gal Lavid was awarded an appreciation plaque at Monday's Township Committee Meeting for acquiring a 9/11 Survivor Tree offspring. Previously, Gal worked for the New York City Parks Department in the Bronx Nursery where the original 9/11 Survivor Tree was cared for. He utilized his Parks network to secure Middletown's tree.
The Middletown Survivor Tree is a descendant of the 9/11 Memorial Survivor Tree that endured the World Trade Center terror attacks in 2001. It was officially planted in the Gardens in October along the memorial pathway and will forever serve as a reminder of our resilience and hope.

Fair View Cemetery in Middletown was part of National Wreaths Across America Day on Saturday, December 17th. Township Committeeman Ryan Clarke and his daughter Kacie joined 3rd Assistant Fire Chief Daniel Kelly, co-location coordinators, Megan Kelly and Chris Harris, and Chris’s son Griffin to place nearly 700 wreaths on veterans’ graves. With each wreath placed, the veteran’s name was read aloud to honor and remember them. Fair View Cemetery has been raising money to participate in this movement for the last seven years to remember our local heroes and place a wreath on every grave. If you are interested in volunteering or sponsoring a wreath for Fair View Cemetery next year, please visit their website or follow them on Facebook @Wreaths Across America - Fair View Cemetery. #RememberHonorTeach #SayTheirNames
