Mayor Tony Perry expresses his gratitude after one of the students came to center of the room to offer the $200 they raised, which was enclosed in a handmade, paper veteran and envelope!
Earlier this week, 26 students from Bayview Elementary School brought some holiday cheer to Town Hall by singing and signing Christmas carols for members of the Township Committee, Middletown Township Police Department, and Township staff. Four teachers and thirteen paraprofessionals accompanied the students from Ms. Amy Jennings, Ms. Amanda LaGuardia, and Ms. Nicole Rotendella’s three multiple disability classes (Grades K-5) for this cheerful celebration. These fun visitors also taught Mayor Tony Perry, Committeewoman Kimberly Kratz, and Deputy Police Chief John Kaiser how to sign “Merry Christmas” in ASL. Ms. Mary Pat Harrington, who teaches sign language at Bayview Elementary, interpreted everything in ASL. After singing and signing, the students presented Mayor Perry with $200 they raised for the incoming veterans-only affordable housing complex that will be located at 37-45 Leonardville Road. They presented the money in an envelope and paper soldier they designed, which will be featured at the housing complex.
The students and staff raised this money through the Heroes Cafe, an idea Ms. Amy Jennings and her students implemented at Bayview Elementary earlier this year. Now, all three classes volunteer at the Heroes Cafe together. The students sort orders and prepare ready-to-brew cups for free, and patrons could pay this act of kindness forward by donating money to an important cause. In the past, they donated money to No Limits Cafe, a Middletown-based café that employs individuals with development disabilities. Thank you to these three classes for spreading some holiday spirit with their Christmas carols and generous donation!
