On Sunday, June 13th, Middletown Township Fire Department (MTFD) planned a surprise BBQ to honor John "Jack" E. Fowler for his more than 50 years of volunteer service with Lincroft Fire Company. Mayor Tony Perry, Deputy Mayor Rick Hibell, and Committeeman Ryan Clarke presented him with a certificate and Key to the Township to commend him for both serving our nation and for his decades of tireless service to our community.

Jack's commitment to Lincroft Fire Company and his extensive leadership roles, including Captain and Chief Engineer, will be forever etched in our Township’s history. His enthusiastic participation in numerous truck committees, the House Committee, and the Door-to-Door Donor Fund Drive is greatly appreciated, as is his admirable track record of answering fire calls day and night. We thank Jack for his extraordinary volunteerism!

On Saturday, June 12th, three Boy Scouts from Troop 32 were promoted to Eagle Scouts at the Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony that took place at the Middletown United Methodist Church. Jason DeSanctis, Tim McGuinness, and George Sima all dedicated 5-6 years of hard work to achieve this accomplishment. Read about their different community service projects below.

  • Jason designed and built three 10’ x 4’ garden beds using 6x6 railroad ties at Middletown Village Elementary School. The garden beds provide an outdoor space where students can learn firsthand about plants. Jason took his project a step further and freshened up the flower beds surrounding the school with new mulch.
  • Tim built a patio and raised flower beds at De La Salle Hall at Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft. The patio is 10’ x 10’, surrounded by raised flower beds 8” high, and built from railroad ties. A statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary was mounted on a stone slab in the back of the patio over the flower beds.
  • George designed and built a 15’ x 27’ labyrinth prayer maze for the All Saints Memorial Episcopal Church in Atlantic Highlands. The maze is made of bricks and pea gravel to create a path, and features a red azalea bush in the center.

Congratulations Eagle Scouts Jason, Tim, and George!
Each of you have made a positive impact in our community.

Pictured from left: Volunteers Marabelle LaTerra and Sue Kologi, Liz Smith from Oasis tlc, Middletown Environmental Commission member Matthew Mauro, volunteer Lydia Mann, Middletown Planning Director Amy Sarrinikolaou, Recycling and Clean Communities Coordinator Jessi Ticino and volunteer Serena LaTerra.

On Wednesday, June 16th, the Middletown Green Team hosted a volunteer planting event to finish up the new butterfly garden at the Poricy Park Nature Center (345 Oak Hill Road). This new garden will not only benefit its visitors, such as bees, butterflies and birds, but also our overall environment as these pollinator species are a vital part of our ecosystem and the health of our local plant life.

The Township was able to fund this garden through a $1,500 grant from the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions received in 2020. Three local organizations were involved in the completion of the garden – Poricy Park Conservancy, who added funding to the project, OASIS tlc, who will be maintaining the garden going forward, and the Middletown NJ Green Team who added much-needed volunteer labor.

Thank you to our volunteers for doing such a fantastic job!

Snapping Turtle

Snapping Turtles Prevalent During Summer Months: What You Should Know

During the summer months, especially in June and July, female snapping turtles will leave their “resident” body of fresh or brackish water (ponds, lakes, and even creeks) and look for soft soil to make a nest for their eggs, such as in a field or in your yard. Middletown Animal Control has even seen them make nests in the small patch of grass in between the curb and the sidewalk.

Important facts:

Snapping turtles' nesting is a natural process and it should not be disrupted. Animal Control will not interrupt this process, nor disrupt the nest in any way.

There is a common misconception that you can pick up a snapping turtle by its tail, however, this can cause spinal damage to the turtle and it is not the way to handle them.

If a turtle is in the road, seems to be struggling, or is sick or injured in any way, you should contact the Animal Control Department at 732-615-2097 Monday through Friday between 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM or the Police Desk at 732-615-2100 after hours and on weekends.

Click HERE to read the original advisory for more information about what you should do if you encounter a snapping turtle.

Sixth-grader Peter (Oakes Fegley) is pretty much your average kid—he likes gaming, hanging with his friends and his beloved pair of Air Jordans. But when his recently widowed grandfather Ed (Robert De Niro) moves in with Peter’s family, the boy is forced to give up his most prized possession of all: his bedroom. Unwilling to let such an injustice stand, Peter devises a series of increasingly elaborate pranks to drive out the interloper, but Grandpa Ed won’t go without a fight. Soon, the friendly combatants are engaged in an all-out war with side-splitting consequences.
