[ARCHIVED] Veterans Eligible for $3000 Income Tax Exemption

US Flag

If you are a military veteran who was honorably discharged or released under honorable circumstances from active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States on or any time before the last day of the tax year, you are eligible for a $3,000 exemption on your 2017 Income Tax return.

The exemption is available to all veterans regardless of their income status or any other benefits they collect. Your spouse (or civil union partner) is also eligible for an exemption if he/she is a veteran who was honorably discharged or released under honorable circumstances and you are filing a joint return. This exemption is in addition to any other exemptions you are entitled to claim and is available on both the resident and nonresident returns. You cannot claim this exemption for a domestic partner or for your dependents.

“The Township Committee and I strongly encourage all Middletown veterans who have proudly served our country to take advantage of this tax exemption,” said Mayor Stephanie C. Murray. “This is a well-deserved tax benefit for those who have sacrificed so much for our nation.”

In order to receive the Income Tax Exemption, a veteran has to fill out a submission form on the New Jersey Division of Taxation website and send it in with their DD-214, or Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty.
