For Immediate Release – September 6, 2017
MIDDLETOWN NJ – Middletown Township today announced that the Police Department will be hosting an Open House for the reactivation of its Explorer Post 102 on Thursday, September 14th from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at police headquarters in the court room located at 1 Kings Highway.
Since 1956, the Middletown Township Police Department has sponsored an Explorer post to provide young people with the opportunity to learn about law enforcement firsthand. Affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America, the program offers youths ages 14 to 20 a personal awareness of the criminal justice system through training, practical experiences, competition, and other activities. While the post was inactive for a few years, the Department is excited to relaunch the program at their Open House. All interested youths and their parents are invited to stop by to learn more about what the program has to offer.
Explorers receive police training and can participate in post-sponsored Ride-Along programs, and other police operations such as Marine Unit, Bike Patrols, Special Operations, and representing the Department at community events or functions. “This is a comprehensive career-focused training opportunity that will help prepare young people for the responsibilities and challenges that accompany law enforcement roles in the community and beyond,” said Middletown Township Police Chief Craig Weber.
Many former post members have gone on to enjoy successful careers in law enforcement at municipal, county, state, and federal agencies. “This program is a great way for our young residents to gain exposure to law enforcement professionals, learn responsibility through leadership opportunities, and benefit from interpersonal growth through challenging experiences and teamwork,” said Mayor Gerry Scharfenberger.
