[ARCHIVED] Mayor Scharfenberger Honored By Middletown Lions Club

Mayor Gerard P. Scharfenberger, Ph.D. has been honored by the Middletown Lions Club for outstanding service to the community.

Mayor Scharfenberger is the proud recipient of the 2016 Spirit of Lionism Public Servant Award. The local service organization bestows the award to those who through their personal service, professional specialties, sacrifices of time and good deeds, improve the quality of life of those in need. Mayor Scharfenberger was honored by the Middletown Lions Club for his knowledge, his energy his vision and his leadership as a public official.

“The Middletown Lions Club is a tremendous organization that has helped thousands of people. It’s truly an honor to receive the Spirit of Lionism Award,” Mayor Gerard P. Scharfenberger, Ph.D.

Mayor Scharfenberger has been serving on the Middletown Township Committee since 2005. He has been a member of the Landmarks Commission since 1996 and currently services on the Middletown Township Open Space Committee and the Municipal Alliance for the Prevention of Alcohol and Drug Abuse. Dr. Scharfenberger, an archaeologist, has lived in Middletown for more than 15 years. He is ardent supporter of many civic, fraternal and veterans organizations. During Super Storm Sandy, he worked tirelessly to lead the way to organize volunteers, unload trucks with food and clothes distributed simple necessities such as ice and water to those who were left without water, food and electricity.

This year also marks the 70th anniversary of the Lions’ charter. The Lions, among their many good works, have provided free vision screening to thousands of elementary school children in Middletown and the surrounding area. Visit for more information.
