Construction began this summer at Tindall Park. The first phase of the project, which is now nearly complete, included renovating Tennis Courts 1-8. Since the second phase of the project recently began, tennis and pickleball courts will be closed to the public until the facility is no longer an active construction site. The area between the courts, the roadway into the park, and the area around the second set of courts have not been completed, and the contractors still need to install curbs and pave the parking lot.
Allowing parts of the site to remain open while construction continues in other areas can pose safety risks to players, staff, and visitors. It is easier and more effective to maintain a safe construction zone when the entire area is closed. Avoiding a phased opening can ultimately streamline the process, reduce costs, and provide a better experience for end-users.
Currently, only the Middletown North High School Tennis Team is permitted to practice and play matches on Courts 1-8. The Township is making this exception because matches are controlled events that are overseen by coaches with a limited duration. If the Township forced the tennis team to use another location, the School District would have to bus their players to and from wherever they went, which would cost both the District and taxpayers money.
While the renovations are being completed, there are many courts across town that recreational tennis players can use for the next 4-6 weeks:
- Bodman (50 Market Street, Middletown)
- Brookdale Community College (765 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft)
- Dorsett Park (93 Devonshire Court, Middletown)
- Fairways Park (331 Middletown-Lincroft Road, Lincroft)
- Hillside Park (Chestnut Avenue, Atlantic Highlands)
- Kunkel Park (Brevent Avenue, Leonardo)
- McMahon Park (380 Atlantic Avenue, North Middletown)
- Normandy Park (625 Nutswamp Road, Middletown)
- Thompson Park (805 Newman Springs Road, Lincroft)
Thank you for your patience as the Township prepares for a complete opening that ensures the facility is fully functional, safe, and enjoyable for everyone.
