MIDDLETOWN, NJ – Middletown Township Police Department (MTPD) Chief R. Craig Weber announced that the MTPD will once again be participating in the “National Take Back Initiative” in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) New Jersey Division, and other state and local law enforcement agencies. The program will occur on Saturday, April 22nd from 10:00am until 2:00pm at the Middletown Township Police Headquarters, located at 1 Kings Highway.
The goal of the 24th National Take Back Initiative is to continue to allow the citizens of New Jersey to rid their homes of unused, unwanted, or expired medications by turning these medications over to law enforcement officials who can in turn dispose of these substances in a safe and non-hazardous manner. In partnership with local law enforcement, Take Back Day has removed more than 8,300 tons of medication from circulation since its inception in 2010. In the most recent event in October 2022, New Jersey collected 16,065 pounds of unwanted medication, with 231 participating state and local departments, making the bi-annual event a continued enormous success and an even greater benefit to our community.
Participants may dispose of medication(s) in the original container, or by removing the medication from the container and disposing of it directly into the disposal box. Individuals are encouraged to remove any identifying information from prescription labels that may be present. All solid dosage pharmaceutical products and liquids may be accepted. Liquid products, such as cough syrup, should remain sealed in their original container. Intra-venous solutions, injectables, and syringes will not be accepted due to potential hazards posed by blood-borne pathogens.
DEA will collect vape pens or other e-cigarette devices from individual consumers ONLY after the batteries are removed from the devices.
It is important to note that the DEA is not responsible for removing the batteries from the devices. If the battery cannot be removed, individual consumers can check with large electronic chain stores who may accept the vape pen or e-cigarette device for proper disposal. Individual consumers may also contact their local Hazardous Materials Management Facility to determine if they accept these devices and for additional guidance regarding proper disposal.
MTPD thanks those who will be participating in this event. We encourage all residents to be mindful of any medications that may be in their households and be sure to keep them out of the reach of small children.
