Armed with the necessary environmental permits and a funding authorization from the state Environmental Infrastructure Trust (EIT), Middletown is moving forward with plans to rehabilitate Shadow Lake. The project involves dredging 150,000 cubic yards of material (or the equivalent of a 7-story building the size of a football field) from the western or upper portion of the lake. The material will be dewatered on a portion of the Stevenson Tract, located near the Lake. Once dewatered, the material is intended to be removed and disposed of off-site.

Shadow Lake, an 80-acre, 3-mile long body of water located in the River Plaza section, needs to be dredged to improve its declining health. Silt and algae have been accumulating on the bottom of the lake over the years making parts of the lake shallow and unusable for recreation, explained Mayor Anthony P. Fiore. Dredging will improve drainage flow, provide long-term protection of the lake’s ecosystem and enhance aquatic recreational opportunities.
