Poricy Park July & August Program Schedule

The Poricy Park Conservancy announces July & August 2010 community programs and events, where there’s something for everyone! Adults, teens, kids and families!!

Ping Pong at Poricy Park!
Mondays, July 12th, 19th, 26th, 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
August 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th, 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Ping pong a game perfect for people of differing athletic abilities! Playing improves reflexes and coordination. It provides an aerobic workout and affords the opportunity to meet new people! We will play singles and doubles by international rules – 11 points wins!! Appropriate for ages 15 years to 115 years. Please call us to register so we know you are coming. Meet at Nature Center

It’s Still Happening!
Tuesdays – July 27th & August 24th - 7:00pm - 8:30pm
Join us for some stimulating conversation and relaxing tea in our 1770 New Jersey State Historic Murray Farmhouse parlor! July Theme – Most everyone agrees the Revolutionary War began in the northern colonies but what was happening in the South? We’ll discuss the patriot & British activity in the early years of the Revolution in the southern colonies. August Theme – Join us as we explore excerpts from the publication “Journal & Letters of Philip Vickers Fithian: A Plantation Tutor of the Old Dominion 1773-1774”! Special guests from the reenacting group ‘Past Muster’ as well as others will participate! Not necessary to commit to all sessions. Meet at the Murray Farmhouse (may use gravel road & park at farmhouse) - Must pre-register at least one week prior to each session

Knitting Bee
Tuesdays July 20th & August 17th, 7:00pm - 8:00pm

Join our knitting group for fun and friendship! We will teach everyone from the “never held a knitting needle” person to experienced knitters who would like to knit in the company of other knitters and everyone in-between. From knit and purl to textured patterns, you can learn! All levels of knitters will be advised upon registration as to what they need to bring. Not necessary to commit to all sessions. Summer dates are subject to change so please call in advance! Meet at the Nature Center

Rebecca’s Garden!
Tuesday Mornings, 9:30am - 11:00am

Come join expert gardeners as they volunteer in the Kitchen Garden at the Murray Farmhouse. Learn as you work! Bring your questions and your work gloves. Weather permitting! Meet at the Murray Farmhouse

Fossil Hunt
Sunday, July 11th & August 8th, 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Come wander in the cool shade over Poricy Brook while looking for fossils this summer! Our experienced guide will provide the trowels & sifters and assist your treasure identification! Please dress for the weather and wear rubber boots or old sneakers. Your feet WILL get wet! Note: Sandals and slip-on footwear prohibited. Remember to bring a small container to hold your five best finds! Appropriate for adults and school age children accompanied by an adult. Younger children welcome with adult assistance. Registration is needed so we will have enough supplies!!! Meet at the Nature Center
Fee: $8 per participant; $32 Family Special (2 adults, 3 children)

Fiber Fest!
Monday, July 19th, 4:00pm - 7:00pm

Come see fabulous fibers & flying fingers as we explore various ways colonial people (and people today) create clothing. From field to fabric, we will have weaving, spinning, and many fine tools! Don’t miss this fun event! Appropriate for ages 8 to 108!! Children must be supervised by their adult. Please register in advance!

Murray Farmhouse Open House
Sunday, July 25th, 3:00pm - 4:30pm

Join us for our annual open house! You can have your own tour of this unique New Jersey State Historic site dating back to Colonial times – 1770! Appropriate for all ages (children must be supervised by their adult). Donations greatly appreciated!

Frog Fest
Sunday, August 15, 4:00pm - 7:00pm

Frogs are cool!!! They provide a source of enjoyment and cultural fascination as well as being an integral part of habitats around the world. Join us as we celebrate frogs with amphibian activity stations. Participants can win a small prize just for exploring the events! Appropriate for frog lovers of all ages! Children must be supervised by their adult. This is a great family activity!! Please register in advance! Meet at Murray Pond

Murray Barn Open House
Sunday, August 29th, 3:00 - 4:30pm
Chickens, and sheep, and cows, Oh My! Come see the barn that Joseph Murray built. View our original 18th century timbers and other unique items including the unusual root cellar. Our experienced interpreter will be glad to share the story! Appropriate for all ages (children must be supervised by their adult). Donations greatly appreciated!

Program Fees
The Poricy Park Conservancy strives to provide quality programs at a reasonable cost to our visitors. Your generous contributions assist us in sustaining our operation. Unless otherwise noted, recommended program donations are $3 for members and $5 for non-members. Pre-Registration is requested for all programs unless noted otherwise, allowing us to plan supplies and instructor coverage accordingly. Although walk-in registration the day of program is available with some programs, a program will be cancelled if the pre-registration minimums are not met. PROGRAMS ARE HELD RAIN OR SHINE SO PLEASE DRESS ACCORDINGLY.

The Poricy Park Conservancy is a non-profit, 501 (c) (3) organization located in Middletown Township. With exceptional ecological resources, the 250 acre historical and nature site makes it one of the largest nature preserves in Monmouth County. The Park offers recreational activities such as magnificent wooded hiking trails, bird watching, pristine pond settings, fishing, and a one-of-a-kind 70 million year-old Cretaceous fossil bed.
