Township Celebrates Older Americans Month

MIDDLETOWN – In keeping with a national tradition that dates back to 1963, May has been proclaimed as Older Americans Month in Middletown by the Township Committee. This year’s Older Americans Month theme—Age Strong! Live Long!—recognizes the diversity and vitality of today’s older Americans who span three generations.

“The annual commemoration of Older Americans Month is our opportunity to honor our older citizens, recognize their ongoing contributions and join them in volunteering with programs that benefits residents of all ages and backgrounds,” said Mayor Gerard P. Scharfenberger at the April meeting. The proclamation was presented to Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Director Gregg A. Silva, Senior Center Supervisor Patrice Nugent and Senior Center members Florence D'Amodio and Kay Yuro.

Older Americans are living longer and are more active than ever before. As the baby boomer generation ages, the senior population is expected to number 71.5 million by 2030. While keeping the growing population of older Americans healthy and active will increase the demand for senior services, what is remarkable is the extent to which older Americans themselves are supporting each other. They volunteer at group meal sites and deliver food to homebound seniors; provide transportation to older adults who cannot drive; and much more, according to the federal Administration on Aging.

Middletown Township will be joining communities nationwide in celebrating this month with special events such as the Older Americans Luncheon on May 13; Ladies Spa Day on May 18; Kids Cupcakes and Crafts on May 25, and a Health Fair on May 27. Call the Middletown Senior Center at 732-615-2265 for information. The center is open to Middletown residents 60 and older.
