General Information for Taxpayers
ASSESSMENTS: Any questions concerning your assessment should be directed to the Tax Assessor. The Collector is responsible for the billing and collection of taxes only.

PRELIMINARY AND FINAL TAXES: The first half taxes (Preliminary) of any year are based on ½ of the previous years’ taxes. When the bill for the second half taxes (Final) is rendered, the tax rate has been established and the total years’ tax fixed. The estimated (Preliminary) amount is deducted and the remainder becomes your second half taxes. N.J.S.A. 54:4-64.

Tax Payment Grace Period: As of November 1, 2010, the grace period in which taxes are due has been changed from the last business day of the month to the 10th day of the month. For example: 

  • AUGUST 11, 2014 
  • NOVEMBER 10, 2014 
  • FEBRUARY 10, 2015  
  • MAY 11, 2015 

Payments received after the 10-day grace period will be considered delinquent and subject to interest. N.J.S.A. 54:4-66. For the November quarter, due to the accelerated tax sale, payments received after 4:00 pm on November 10th  must be made by bank cashier check, cash or money order.

RECEIPTS: Remittances requiring a receipt must be accompanied by the entire tax bill with a self-addressed stamped envelope. Otherwise, detach the appropriate stub and mail with your check, the canceled check will be your receipt.

Payment Options

Online -You can pay your taxes online using a credit, debit card or a direct ACH payment. Block and lot information and available funds are required for this transaction. Please note that As of May 1, 2010, tax payments made by credit card either in person or on-line will be charged a convenience fee by the third party processing agent. There is no fee charged for an ACH payment.

For the November quarter, online payments will not be accepted after 3:00 pm on  November 10th because of the accelerated tax sale.

Payments made after 4:00 pm on November 10th must be made by bank, cashier check, cash or money order.

By Mail - Make checks payable to the Township of Middletown and mail to:

In Person –Bring your tax payment to the Tax Department’s payment window during business hours. Bring your tax bill if you need a receipt. No rolled coins will be accepted.  As of May 1, 2010, tax payments made by credit card in-person or on-line will be charged a convenience fee by the third party processing agent. Taxpayers can pay cash, check and/or ACH for no additional charge.

Credit cards payments are not accepted for the November quarter after 3:00 pm on November 10 because of the accelerated tax sale. Payments made after 3:00 pm on November 10 must be made by bank, cashier check, cash or money order.

Drop Box - After 4 p.m., please use the night drop box located by the front door of the Johnson-Gill Annex. The box is opened at 8 a.m. each business day. Payments dropped in the box after 8 a.m. will be processed the next business day. Please come into the office for same day processing.

TAX BILL: This bill should be given to the new owner or his paying agent upon sale or exchange of this property. A charge will be imposed for a duplicate tax bill.
