Deputy Chief Craig Bahrs

Deputy Chief Craig Bahrs began his career with the Middletown Township Police Department on January 16, 1996, when he was sworn in as a police officer. After graduating from the Middlesex Police Academy, Bahrs was assigned to a patrol squad and served as a Patrolman.  In March of 2000, Bahrs was assigned as a Narcotics K9 Handler with his police dog “Jack”.  Both Bahrs and his K9 partner graduated from the New Jersey State Police Canine Scent Class in June of 2000.  In his capacity as K9 Handler, Bahrs was responsible for narcotic investigations, narcotic interdiction and informant development.  He also participated in community policing vis-a’- vis lecturing before various community groups about the uses of police dogs, conducted K9 demonstrations and lectured about the dangers of drug abuse.

In July of 2005, Officer Bahrs was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.  His responsibilities included, responding to and supervising critical calls for service and developing officers through training, guidance and mentoring.  In January 2008 Sergeant Bahrs was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant where he was responsible for commanding a squad of officers and civilian dispatchers.

In September of 2010, Bahrs was promoted to Deputy Chief and assigned to the Uniform Division, which includes the Traffic Bureau and the Patrol Bureau.  His responsibilities include overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Uniform Division. Additionally, Deputy Chief Bahrs is responsible for playing his part in promoting the quality of life for Middletown residents through ensuring effective policing practices and partnering with the community. 

Deputy Chief Bahrs earned a Master of Arts degree in Human Resource Training and Development from Seton Hall University, Bachelor of Arts degree from Widener University and he is a 1987 graduate of Middletown High School North.  Deputy Chief Bahrs also attended numerous professional training courses including the West Point Command and Leadership Program.

Deputy Chief Bahrs is married with four children and is a life-long Middletown resident.
