The Building Department & The Department of Inspections provides for cooperative inspection and enforcement of all Construction Codes relating to the construction, maintenance, use and occupancy of buildings and structures.

Before you start your project, you will need to:

  1. Click here to review to Table of Project-based Requirements.

  2. Obtain a Zoning approval if your project requires one.

  3. Get a Construction Permit Application and all necessary subcode applications. Permits can be obtained from the Building Department located at the Johnson Gill Annex, Kings Highway. Call (732) 615-2106 for more information.

  4. Submit your completed applications and any drawings/plans to the Department of Inspections for review.

  5. When the Department of Inspections completes the plan review and approval process, you will be notified that your permits are ready.

  6. You may start work when you have paid for and received your Construction Permit.

  7. Depending on your project type, one or more work phase inspections may be necessary. All work must pass final inspection in order for a BCO (Buisiness Certificate of Occupancy), CO (Certificate of Occupancy), or CA (Certificate of Approval) to be issued.

What to do if your project has failed inspection?

  1. Call the Building Department to request a list of violations.

  2. Review list and correct deficiencies.

  3. Reschedule all necessary inspections.
