Eugene Patrick Hannafey

Eugene Patrick Hannafey was appointed as a patrolman on January 1, 1972. Upon his graduation from the Atlantic County Police Academy he was assigned to the Patrol Bureau. On December 1, 1979 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant as a field supervisor and promoted to Lieutenant on November 11, 1985 where he commanded a patrol squad. From November 2001 until January 2006, Lieutenant Hannafey served as the departments Training Coordinator where he was responsible for the management and organization of training and educational programs for the entire police department. In that capacity he was responsible for maintaining interagency relationships with municipal, county and state organizations, as well budgeting, logistics, maintenance of training files and Departmental regulations. In addition, Lt. Hannafey was responsible for the administration of the police range facilities.

On January 2, 2006, Lt. Hannafey was reassigned as the commanding officer of the Technical Services Bureau in which his responsibilities include the management and supervision of the Detective Bureau, Service Bureau, Police Management Information Systems, Communications and the Community Relations Bureau. Eventually was promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief on April 17, 2006, where he continues to serve the citizens of Middletown.

Deputy Chief Hannafey has earned a Master’s degree in Public Administration (Magnum Cum Laude) and a certificate in Public Management from Fairleigh Dickinson University, a Bachelor of Science (Magnum Cum Laude) degree in Criminal Justice from Jersey City State College, an Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts and Associate of Science in Criminal Justice from Brookdale Community College.

Deputy Chief Hannafey and his wife, Denys, of more than 35 years, have a son Eugene Joseph, who is a detective with New Jersey State Police. Deputy Chief Hannafey has received many commendations an awards, including but not limited to, the Combat Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, (3) Medals of Merit, a Life Saving Medal, and several Certificates of Merit.

Deputy Chief Hannafey has been a member of the Middletown Township Human Rights Commission and currently serves as it Vice-Chairman and is a member of the Township Safety Council as well as the Middletown Township Drug Alliance. In addition, he is an Adjunct Instructor of Criminal Justice at Brookdale Community College where he has taught Introduction to Criminal Justice, Criminal Due Process and Criminal Investigation. Deputy Chief Hannafey has also served at President of the Middletown Township Superior Officers Association, a position he held from January of 1990 until December of 2004.
