Each year the Township Committee holds four informal meetings to hear the concerns and ideas of residents. “I hope many residents will be able to join us. The neighborhood meetings are a valuable way to maintain a greater understanding of key quality of life issues in our neighborhoods and to share information with residents on township services and resources,” said Mayor Gerard P. Scharfenberger

This year’s neighborhood meetings all begin at 7:30 p.m. and will be held at Navesink Elementary School on March 13th, New Monmouth Elementary School on March 20th, River Plaza Elementary School on March 29th and at the Tonya Keller Bayshore Recreation Center on April 9th. School addresses are listed below.

Township Committee members, the Tax Assessor and representatives from the Parks, Recreation Cultural Affairs, Police, Public Works and Planning Departments are scheduled to attend. All meetings will include an update on the ongoing revaluation and a general discussion period. No formal action is taken at these meetings.

The Local Assistance Board oversees assistance programs provided to residents by the Middletown Social Services Department. Some of their responsibilities include determining the eligibility of applicants and recipients; determining the amount of financial assistance to be received; helping clients obtain an adequate standard of living and to become self-supporting; provide case management; and maintain and protect all records and appropriate documents required by the state.

The Local Assistance Board consists of five members. Four members serve a four-year term and one member serves a one-year term. Meetings are held the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Social Services Office, 900 Leonardville Road. Call 732-615-2085 for more information.

LATE NIGHT VOTER REGISTRATION AND REGISTRATION CHANGES

The last day to register before the April 17, 2007 School Board Election is Tuesday, March 27th. The last day to register to vote prior to the June 5, 2007 Primary Election is Tuesday, May 15th.

The Township Clerk’s office is offering extended hours on Tuesday, March 27th and Tuesday May 15th from 8:30 AM to 9:00 PM for voter registration and changes.

Voter registrations are accepted at the Township Clerk’s Office Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. year round. Registration forms can be obtained from the Clerk’s Office or from www.middletownnj.org.

Landmark Commission meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at the Middletown Library, 55 New Monmouth Road, at 7:30 p.m. Call 732-615-2014 for more information.

The Landmarks Commission is an advisory body established in 1974. Their mission is to promote the educational, cultural, economic and general welfare of Middletown through the preservation of historic buildings and structures, and of places and districts of historic interest and the development and maintenance of appropriate settings for such buildings, structures, places and districts.

The Landmarks Commission provides architectural review of structures within Historic Districts. They also work to identify and record all buildings, sites, places and structures or significant historical or architectural value and aid the public in understanding their worth. In addition, the Landmarks Commission is currently working to preserve nearly 40 historic cemeteries scattered throughout the township.

The New Monmouth Library is our main library. There are three other branches located in the Bayshore, Lincroft and Navesink sections of Middletown. It is not part of the Monmouth County Library system. The Middletown Township Public Library exists for the purpose of providing materials that are necessary for the education and entertainment of the people of Middletown Township. The library works to increase the quality of its services and provide materials needed to accomplish this aim. Its most recent accomplishment is the renovation of the main branch.

The Governor's Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse was created to coordinate New Jersey's efforts in regard to the planning and provision of treatment, prevention, research, evaluation, and education services for, and public awareness of, alcoholism and drug abuse. The Middletown Municipal Alliance for Prevention of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse was in 1990 in response to the Governor's Council. The alliance's volunteer members are a broad representation of the private sector and professional community.

High school juniors and seniors who live in Middletown are invited to submit essays about their local government for a chance to win a $1,000 scholarship in the 2009 Louis Bay II Future Municipal Leaders Scholarship Competition. Essays are due today!

The scholarship is offered though a joint venture between local mayors and the New Jersey League of Municipalities. The contest is open to any high school junior or senior who lives in Middletown. Each student must write an approximately 500-word essay on the theme, “What My Mayor and Governing Body Do Best,” to be included in the contest. The theme is chosen by the state League of Municipalities.
“The theme is designed to advance the virtues of elected and volunteer positions in municipal government while raising awareness of municipal government in general,” explained Mayor Pamela M. Brightbill.

Middletown will select one essay to forward to the League of Municipalities in Trenton as a semi-finalist. The League of Municipalities will then choose fifteen finalists and 3 scholarships winners. Winners will be announced in May. Winning essays will be featured in the New Jersey Municipalities magazine.

Applications are available at area schools, the Mayor’s Office, located at Town Hall and online. For more information, students should check with their high school or call the mayor’s office at (732) 615-2024.
